About that Debt

Mr. Biden and his Democrat supporters in Congress have their hair on fire these days over the Republican proposals to cut government spending. Biden and friends hysterically warn that America will default on its debt and its credit will be ruined internationally. All of that is, of course, nonsense as they well know.
There is rich irony in the Democrat position on the debt ceiling and the national spending. The Republicans have proposed cuts in the current spending authorized in the so-called “Omnibus Bill” jammed through Congress late in December and specially flown to the President while he vacationed in the Caribbean. The Omnibus Bill was over 4,000 pages in length. Congressmen were presented with a demand to approve and adopt the bill late at night without any opportunity to read it. It is beyond question that the impaired occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue not only did not read the bill but could not, on paid of death, tell us what is provides in any detail whatsoever!
And yet, Mr. Biden has issued an ultimatum to the Republicans, demanding that they approve an increase in the national debt and that they keep their hands off the spending authorized by the Omnibus Bill. He has said that he will not negotiate with them about a single issue. That is nothing more than bravado from a man who is a bully to those who are weak and caves immediately when confronted with strength. He is an empty suit and everyone knows it.
Here is what the Republicans must do. They must do through the Omnibus Bill with a fine tooth comb and identify every piece of pork and unnecessary spending that was crammed into the bill in the dark of night in order to buy the votes of Congressmen. Those items ought to be presented to the American public, line by line, with dollar amounts attached. Special interest projects that will be named for the sponsoring legislator ought to be scratched. Biden cannot, with a straight face, defend such spending as necessary for the national defense or for the operation of the country. His threats will be shown up for what they are – posturing.
The Republicans have promised to cut spending. They have not promised an amount. Therefore, any amount they can carve off the obscene Omnibus Bill will be progress and partially fulfill that promise. On the other hand, if the Republicans do as they have in the past and cave to the threats of the Democrats, they will show themselves to be cowards unworthy of the votes of Republican voters. This is a test for the Republicans in Congress. Whether they will pass the test is an open question.
