Biden Celebrates Abortion

“The constitutional right established in Roe v. Wade nearly 50 years ago today is under assault as never before. [Abortion on demand] is a right we believe should be codified into law, and we pledge to defend it with every tool we possess.”

President Biden’s remarks on the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade did not receive widespread media coverage. Perhaps that was due to the fact that the commitment expressed in his statement is so radically different from the opinions of the overwhelming majority of the people he was elected to serve, more than 70% of whom oppose abortion after the first trimester of pregnancy. Perhaps the lack of coverage was due to the fact that Biden’s position represents a significant departure from the claim of the Clinton Administration that abortion should be safe and rare. Today’s progressive Democrats simply want abortion without limits.

The President’s claim that abortion is a constitutional right is simply a careless and inaccurate statement. The “right” to an abortion, to the degree that it exists, is an extension of an invented constitutional “right” discovered by former Justice, William O. Douglas, who discovered the right of privacy lurking in the penumbra of the Constitution. Justice Blackmun then expanded the “right of privacy” to include the right of abortion [also apparently hidden in the penumbra of the Constitution]. Many judges and lawyers were surprised to learn the Constitution even had a penumbra. That term is generally associated with astronomy and refers to the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object. The Founders made no mention of a “penumbra” in any of their speeches and writing about the Constitution. Ratcatcher doubts that any of the Founders would have willingly admitted that the Constitution was an opaque object capable of casting a shadow. They might even have asked the obvious question, what is the source of the light which, when shined on the Constitution, results in the creation of a shadow in which a “right” such as the “right of privacy” might hide.

Biden is either ignorant of, or simply does not care, that there is virtual unanimity in the medical world that a baby is a human life at conception, independent of its mother, with a separate blood stream, nerve system, DNA, and all of the other characteristics that comprise a human being. He is either ignorant of, or simply does not care, that an unborn child feels pain.

The Democrat Party leadership, and the President in particular, are so in the thrall of the abortion industry and captivated by the money it donates to their campaigns, that they must advocate the extreme policies demanded by the abortionists or face severe consequences. Regrettably, it appears that those few Democrats who identify as “moderate” are too intimidated by the strident voices of NOW and similar organizations to speak up and vote against the progressives.

Principled courage is rare in the 21st Century. It is particularly hard to find when the discussion of abortion and the life of the unborn is on the table. The weak cower in fear of the opprobrium of the abortion movement. Pathetic!
