Bless Me, Father, For I Have Sinned

Ratcatcher is not Roman Catholic and does not claim to have expertise in the doctrine and practice of the Roman Church. We do, however, have at least a passing familiarity with the practice of devout Catholics. President Biden claims to be a devout Catholic and many of his apologists confirm that, so we will assume that he follows standard practice.

The blessing (or curse, dependent on your view of things) of videotape and digital recordings is that we now have a fairly comprehensive record of what people in public life say and do. That video/digital record is replete with examples of Mr. Biden’s lies, whether it had to do with his epiphany about homosexuals, his graduation place in his law school class, authorship of speeches, and his position on abortion. In the past two years of the Biden presidency, the lying has exploded exponentially to the point that any attempt to catalogue the lies would inevitably be incomplete.

Our purpose in this post is not to amass the totality of Mr. Biden’s lies. It is, rather, to address the question of how Mr. Biden deals with his lying. It is certainly true that none of us has the right to invade the sanctity of the confessional. What Biden confesses to his priest is, naturally, between him and God. We will never know whether Mr. Biden remembers to confess the lies or not. But, assuming he does, one wonders whether his confessor gets tired of hearing the same old story – Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. Since my last confession I have told 1,083 lies to the American public.

Now, we don’t wish to be irreverent or disrespectful to the Catholic tradition, but one must wonder how many “Hail Mary’s” the President is required to say to expiate all those lies. And what about next week? Does his confessor ever say, “Now Joe, stop the lying. If you keep it up, God may wonder whether you really mean your confession.”

Ah, well. Since Ratcatcher is not God, we don’t have to worry about the long-term consequences of all those lies. As an American, we do worry!
