Tomorrow is Christmas Eve and Christians around the world will gather in preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Ratcatcher is not a theologian nor qualified to speak about the nuances of Christianity or other religions. But any honest person must concede that the birth of Christ was a watershed in history, an event that literally changed the calendar. Tomorrow, unless something unanticipated occurs, The Wall Street Journal will again publish an opinion article titled In Hoc Anno Domini, remembering and celebrating the birth of Christ.
The writer closed with the admonition of the Apostle Paul to “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” That applies today as well as it did when Paul wrote the words and the editorial writer wrote in 1949. If there is anything needed at the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, it is the courage of men and women everywhere to stand fast; to embrace and rely upon the liberty provided by Christ; and to refuse to allow the chains of bondage, whether from the government, business, or our own decisions to entangle us.
2022 will be upon us within two weeks. It is far past time for Americans to take stock of our condition; to weigh the freedoms that we have ceded to the government and large corporations; to think about whether we can recover those rights and freedoms; and to embrace the freedom and liberty guaranteed by the Constitution.
