The Daily Signal has recently reported that English police arrested a British army veteran as he prayed silently in front of an abortion facility in Bournemouth in November, later issuing the man a fine of about $123.65. Adam Smith-Connor told authorities he was praying for his son who was aborted. Mr. Smith-Connor was, apparently, aware that the area around the abortion clinic was governed by a protective order that bans prayer, among other activities.

Think about that for a moment. Smith-Connor was PRAYING. He was standing outside the abortion facility praying silently. Even the police had to ask him what he was doing. He could have lied, of course, and violated his own conscience. His PRESENCE outside the abortuary was the problem; the abortionists and their allies were offended that he might object to what they were doing. Mr. Smith-Connor did not interfere with passers-by or those seeking to enter the abortion clinic. He did not block its entrance, scream obscenities as the abortion supporters generally do, or spray paint the clinic, again as the abortion supporters are wont to do to churches and pregnancy support centers.

To its everlasting shame, England does not have a Bill of Rights or a First Amendment. There is no constitutional protection for Mr. Smith-Connor’s prayers. Progressives in America often want to emulate European practices and policies. We can, therefore, reasonably expect proposals to be floated in Congress and state legislatures to outlaw praying near abortion clinics. This is an outrage and ought to be acknowledged as such. This is the sort of encroachment on our rights which, if not nipped in the bud, will expand and reach into other areas of life. Soon, any public expression of faith, prayer, or other acknowledgement of the Divine will be outlawed or hedged in with restrictions. That cannot be allowed ever to start.
