Corporate Hypocrisy

The media has discovered the Ukrainian genocide in progress at the hands of Vladimir Putin and his Russian Army and has begun carrying stories about the tragedy and its root causes (Donald Trump, of course). National advertisers have also discovered the Ukrainian War and decided that it makes sense to punish Russia by withdrawing their businesses from that country. So, Disney has pulled the release of its releases like Marvel's Doctor Strange and Pixar's Lightyear; Exxon, Shell, Ford, and Apple have all pulled out of Russia along with Microsoft and DIRECTV, and Nike is closing 116 of its stores, all in reaction to the atrocities perpetrated by the Putin forces.
But here’s a funny thing. Not one of these famous brand companies has had the guts to pull its business out of China in protest of the Chinese enslavement of the millions of Uyghurs who are producing many of their products? What’s really at play here? Dollars! Dollars, plain and simple. These giant companies reap billions of dollars annually in sales to the Chinese market. The products may be produced by slaves, but there is no media to report on that slavery; there are no reporters thrusting microphones and cameras into the faces of the Uyghur slaves, asking for their comments, opinions on their enslavement, whether they have any requests to make to the Western governments, especially the U.S. They are silent without voices so the big brands can continue safely benefitting from the exploitation of the slaves by the Chinese. Remember that the next time you think about buying Nike products all of which are brought to you by Uyghur slaves. Think about it the next time you consider purchasing tickets to an NBA game, or viewing Disney films.
