Drain the Swamp!

Who thinks the federal bureaucracy functions well and is even-handed? Anyone want to create more bureaucrats or give more power to those we already have? How about taking away oversight power and responsibility from Congress – good idea?

Thoughtful people have contended for a long time that the federal administrative state has grown out of control. Donald Trump made a campaign issue of “drain the swamp.” Many argue that the delegation of rule making by Congress to federal agencies is an unconstitutional delegation of authority not granted by the Constitution. When asked, a large majority of Americans think that the unaccountability of the administrative state is a bad thing.

So what do the Democrats do? As the Census Bureau faces questions about a botched population count in 2020, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, has sponsored HR 8326, a bill that would dramatically change the Census Bureau’s accountability to taxpayers and elected lawmakers. The Census Bureau’s own Post-Enumeration Survey determined that the 2020 census undercounted six mostly conservative states and overcounted eight mostly liberal states. The errors potentially tilt both representation in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College in favor of Democrats Think about that for a minute. An agency that has already demonstrated incredible incompetence is to be rewarded by legislation immunizing it from Congressional and voter control and oversight. Seem like a good idea?

In typical Democrat misdirection and dishonesty, Rep. Maloney’s bill is named “Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census Act.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

This bill grants the Census Bureau’s director the sole authority to make operational, statistical, or technical decisions about the census. The bill also says the director would be removable only for “inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office. At present, the Census Director is nominated by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and can be removed by the President at any time. Once appointed and confirmed, under this bill, the Director would be essentially immune from removal. This bill dangerous and reckless bill will expand the administrative state at the expense of democracy, accountability, and fairness.

Now for the best part. If this becomes law, the next bills introduced will propose similar protection for the FBI, the DOJ, the CIA, and, in sequence, the other administrative state bad actors. Do you want that? It’s coming to your neighborhood unless you take action to stop this bill.
