I Was Just Following Orders

On the northern border of the US the nation of Canada has just embraced a tyranny reminiscent of the conduct of dictators the world over. Crush dissent; seize the assets of those who challenge your mandates; and refuse to talk to the challengers – they are, after all, beneath you.
The Parliament in Canada has fallen in line with Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister. It is as if they too are afraid of his power to silence them; arrest them; and seize their bank accounts as if they were mere truckers. In that, they have betrayed their constituents. Ratcatcher sincerely hopes the constituents will recall the feckless and cowardly of those they elected to represent them.
Some of the most striking visuals of the tragedy in Canada unfolded nightly on our televisions as we watched the police corral, beat, arrest, and, in one instance, trample people who were lawfully protesting the actions of the Trudeau government or simply happened to be walking in the vicinity of the Parliament building. They were “following orders” given to them by their officers who, in turn, were following the orders of the Prime Minister and his minions. Those officers would, we are sure, defend their actions by the ancient plea that they “were just following orders.” Ratcatcher wonders whether any of those officers have ever read about or student the Nuremberg Trials that followed the conclusion of the Second World War. One need not go back that far into history to recall other police officers who claimed that, when arresting crowds or even individuals, they were “just following orders.”
It remains to be seen whether the defense of “following orders” will avail much when those who were beaten, wrongly arrested, whose property was seized, or were trampled by horses seek recourse in the courts. Ratcatcher is not a Canadian and does not have expertise in Canadian law. However, if the conduct of the Trudeau government and the police was ultimately lawful, and if those who were injured as a result of its punitive and harsh measures have no recourse, the reputation of Canada as a civilized country that respects the rights of its citizens will suffer a devastating blow. Americans will do well to keep a close watch on the Canadian proceedings to see exactly how this all plays out; whether there is justice for those who were so wrongly injured by the Trudeau government; and whether the Biden authorities will seek to emulate Trudeau.
Almost twenty months ago, Ratcatcher warned of the danger of complacency, quoting the famous reminder of Martin Neimoller – “Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.” Don’t get caught asleep. Speak up now while you still have time and voice.
