Lies and Damned Lies

Politicians and their allies have dramatically increased their accusations of lying when attacking their opponents. Many times, the claim that “X is lying” is nothing more than the assertion that X has said something that may be in dispute. Regrettably, the political class, which is woefully lacking in real thinkers, defaults to calling the other person a liar rather than offering a more nuanced rebuttal.
But there are occasions in which the word “liar” is fully justified. One such event occurred today when former Vice President Joe Biden accused President Trump of calling dead and wounded soldiers “suckers.” Biden did not even seem aware of the outrageous lie. The root of that slander is an article in Atlantic, a magazine that caters to the far left, published in September of 2020, written by Jeffrey Goldberg. Without citing one single source, Mr. Goldberg makes the claim that M. Trump refused to visit a cemetery near Paris, saying ““Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” Goldberg claimed that, in a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed. Not one person has come forward to authenticate the story; no one claims to have witnessed the President make such a statement. On the contrary, numerous men and women who were present have said, on the record, that the statements were never made. The claim is preposterous on its face since the President is constantly surrounded by cameras and sound recorders. Surely one of those would have caught the words had he actually said them. Goldberg’s article is completely discredited.
But just like Hermann Goebbels and Saul Alinsky, Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats follow the practice that if you tell a lie, even an outrageous lie, often enough, eventually people will believe it. So, there was Joe, lying bald faced to the American public, claiming that President Trump had made such disgraceful statements. And in true Democrat fashion, Joe didn’t bother to admit that he was not present when the President said those words; he did not concede that there is not one single person who claims to have witnessed the President saying those words; and he certainly did not admit that the Goldberg article has been thoroughly debunked. But good old Joe doesn’t even know when to quit while telling a lie. Having laid the groundwork with the lie about the President’s word, he then pivoted to talk about his son Beau and included Beau in the group of people President Trump allegedly disrespected. But Beau did not die in battle; Beau did not die of battle wounds. Beau tragically succumbed to cancer.
So, in the Ratcatcher’s opinion, Mr. Biden engaged in a damned lie. His was not an exaggeration or a difference of opinion. No, it was a flat out lie and told with malice.
