My Truth Is the Only Truth

Forty years ago, academics, intent on the destruction of American culture, began advancing aggressively the idea that there was no such thing as “absolute truth.” That was a convenient way to dismiss religious claims and the very idea of God. If there is no such thing as absolute truth, then the notion of an all-powerful, all-knowing God falls of its own weight. It is an absurd proposition.

The logical extension of that premise was that every “truth” was entitled to equal respect and honor. “My truth is as good and true as your truth” goes the mantra. Of course, from a logical point of view, that cannot be true. Black is not white and all the loud declaiming to the contrary will not make it so.

Unfortunately, as these radical movements have proven in the past, the advocates are never satisfied. Today, it is not enough for a person to concede that your truth is as good and true as his truth. It is insufficient to concede that black really is white. Today, armed with the overwhelming forces of Facebook, YouTube and similar social media platforms, the person advocating for black is prevented from speaking. No longer can he contend that he has truth on his side; no longer can he claim that what he sees is black and not white. Today, he is compelled either to concede that all is white, or simply be silent. His opinion or belief is outlawed. This evolution in speech and thinking has reached its logical conclusion – the conclusion embraced by all dictators and kings. My way or the highway!

The irony of all of this is that the apparent leaders of this movement – those in the vanguard – are the young, children and students in colleges and universities. The demographic that once could be counted on to resist conformity, to fight against restrictions on speech and writing and other forms of expression, have morphed into the dictatorial class they once fought. We dare you to come to a college or university campus with a conservative or religious message – or one that varies even slightly from what they have been taught, and these neo-Nazi youth corps will jeer at you; shout you down; and even threaten physical violence if you continue. For the first time in memory, the young have actively embraced a zeitgeist of limitation on freedom of expression.

But here’s the thing these children [and Ratcatcher uses that term advisedly!!] do not realize; perhaps have never read about since reading would stretch their minds and might introduce them to new and perhaps foreign ideas – their movement will eventually turn on them and eat them too. They will discover that once “truth” becomes unmoored from the absolute, it is plastic and can be made to be anything that anyone wants it to be. The new “truth” will continue to silence and restrict the thoughts and expressions of those who practice it. One day America will see a new group of Brown Shirts who will enforce “the truth” of the exalted leader. God help us when that day comes!
