America is crying – or at least those Americans not consumed with hatred for conservatives and the Second Amendment [“Beto O’Rourke and Joe Biden]. Nineteen elementary age children, dead! Two elementary teachers, dead! Numerous other children traumatized, and their parents left to wonder whether they can ever again safely send their children to school, the market, the park, or to visit friends in the neighborhood. Uvalde has become Everytown; parents across America tuck their children into bed praying that they will be spared the awful tragedy that befell Uvalde.

And into their horror and the deep grief that has been visited on them come the unwelcome political ranting of Joseph R. Biden and the grossly unseemly intrusion of would-be Governor of Texas, Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, haranguing about guns laws the responsibility of everyone except the shooter of the children. And on the television and cable networks talking heads offer their opinions of what went wrong; suggestions that the shooter was mental unbalanced; and what can be done to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Most of the “solutions” focus on confiscation of guns; greater restrictions on access to firearms; more background checks; some form of monitoring of the Internet [supposing that would-be shooters can be apprehended before they can harm anyone]; and the ultimate solution -- hardening of school properties, including the assignment of armed security personnel.

Interestingly, and quite sadly, no one mentions the spiritual bankruptcy of America. No one mentions the eviction of God from the classrooms of America more than sixty years ago. No one mentions the destruction of the American family and the absence of fathers from homes, resulting in fatherless and directionless children, especially young men. Over fifty years ago, Daniel Patrick Moynihan put his finger directly on the problem when he focused on the absence of fathers in black homes. When he wrote, the problem was primarily in the black family; today, it knows no bounds and affects every demographic in the country. The combination of fatherless young men with no one to restrain and guide them how to be responsible adults and the abandonment of God has been a deadly witch’s brew, poisoning large segments of our nation.

Some of Ratcatcher’s readers will no doubt pooh pooh our contention that what America needs most, indeed literally is bleeding for, is a deep and heart-felt return to God. At the risk of stating of obvious, we do not intend or mean a government-sponsored program. That is prohibited by the Constitution and would not work even if permitted. What is needed is a grass-roots movement – a revival, if you will – to embrace again the biblical underpinnings of America. Until that begins, the coffin makers will be kept busy burying our children. God have mercy on us!
