Repurposing Manzanar

Recently, while driving on the Eastern side of California, in the Owens Valley, Ratcatcher stopped at a memorial to the Japanese Americans who were relocated [interred] during the Second World War. The site, called Manzanar, was home to hundreds of Americans of Japanese descent relocated there during the war against Imperial Japan. The relocation camp is only one of many and is a constant and vivid reminder of irrational and xenophobic fears growing from the Japanese military attacks in the Pacific. The event was shameful and represents a black mark on American history.
Manzanar may have a new life. It is common today to repurpose shopping centers into churches and schools and office buildings into condominiums. Perhaps it is time to repurpose Manzanar.
David Atkins, a member of the Democratic National Committee, has recently proposed that Democrats and liberals should "start thinking” about how to "deprogram 75 million people." Those are, of course, the deplorables of Hillary Clinton’s dreams, the smelly Wal-Mart shoppers memorialized by Peter Strzok and those who, in Barack Obama’s words cling to their Bibles and guns. They are, in short, Trump voters. They are, apparently, to be re-educated. Such re-education centers are already in use in Communist China, re-educating Uyghur Muslims.
Mr. Atkins and his ilk in the Democrat Party will need many large spaces in which to conduct their re-education and deprogramming activities. Ratcatcher thinks Manzanar would be ideal since it already carries the legacy of such confinement.
