Senate Republican Treachery

As the 117th Congress winds to a close, the Republican Party holds an equal number of seats in the Senate with the Democrats. That equality gives the Republicans great power to influence the direction of legislation and to control the pace of spending. Are the Republicans using that power to balance out the Democrats? The answer is a resounding No.! Under the leadership of Mitch McConnell, the Republicans misused campaign funds to harm conservative candidates, thereby assuring that the Republican Party would become a minority in the Senate.

Mitch McConnell, leader of the Republican Senators, has caved to the demands of Chuck Schumer and approved a massive budgetary bill for the 2023 fiscal year which is set to be voted on in a few days. McConnell has failed to line up the other Senators in opposition to the Biden open-border policy notwithstanding the incredible damage that is doing to the entire country. He has utterly failed to use his power to rein in the irresponsible energy policies of the Biden Administration and, in so doing, has become complicit in the creation of the energy shortage in America.

The title of this post includes the word treachery, so you may ask where’s the treachery? Spending bills are to originate in the House of Representatives. Kevin McCarthy, probable Speaker when the 118th Congress convenes in January 2023, has already announced policies that will curtail a great deal of spending by the federal government. But Mr. McConnell, aiding the Democrats, threatens to prevent that and to cut off his own party’s knees in service to the Democrats! That’s treachery.

This entire debacle is brought to you by the Lame Duck Session of Congress. One might fairly argue that, the people having spoken and elected new Representatives and Senators, owe it to the people not to legislate during the Lame Duck Session so as to prevent the will of the people from being done. Ah, wishful thinking!

BLOWBACK: Ratcatcher respectfully recommends the following to Mr. McCarthy – something that he must do at once – no delay. The House of Representatives is a co-equal branch of government with the Senate. It is entitled to great weight and respect. It was designed by the Founders to reflect most closely the will of the people. So Mr. McCarthy should immediately visit Mitch McConnell. In blunt, non-collegial and clear terms he should advise McConnell to withdraw all support for the Omnibus Spending Bill immediately and to make sure his fellow Republican Senators do not vote for it. If McConnell fails to comply, he should be informed that the House will stymie each and every bill that Mr. McConnell and the Senate Republicans attempt to pass for the foreseeable future.

There has to be a cost to McConnell’s betrayal. It is well passed time for the Republicans to learn to play hardball and back it. Don’t flinch!
