Silence of the Chief

A month ago we wrote complaining that the Chief Justice had failed to report on the leak of the confidential draft opinion in the Dobbs case. Five months have now passed since that infamy occurred and we have yet to learn the name of the miscreant who violated his oath and the traditions of the Supreme Court.
It is of little help to rehearse again the terrible damage done by that leak to the trust and confidence that the justices have with each other. Speaking only for Ratcatcher, I sincerely doubt that we would extend the trust to the other justices that were the hallmark of the Court’s practices for all of its history. The damage may be irreparable.
The one absolutely certain thing is that severe punishment ought to be visited on the thief who leaked the opinion in a misguided attempt to pressure the justices who were inclined to overturn Roe vs. Wade to reconsider. The effort failed but, as is so often the result of radical leftists’ actions, collateral damage was done to a revered institution of the U.S. government, a creation of the Constitution. But, as is always the case with Alinsky-thinking leftists, the end justifies the means, so who cares who gets hurt or what institution is destroyed in the effort?
Chief Justice Roberts has shown himself to be at best a poor defender of the Court in his failure to keep the public apprised of the investigation into the identify and punishment of the leaker; at worst, he is a coward in his failure to pursue the miscreant and see that severe punishment is meted out on behalf of his fellow jurists as well as the rest of us. We would have thought better of him.
