Sleep Walking Through Tragedy

America is bombarded daily with film showing the devastation in Ukraine committed by Vladimir Putin and his Russian forces. The evidence is overwhelming the civilians have been intentionally targeted – homes, businesses, and individuals, including women and children. The footage is chilling – enough to make a reasonable person sick; cause him to turn away in horror and disgust. And yet those scenes seem not to have moved America’s “Commander in Chief.” The use of those quotation marks was intentional, not an accident. It is unclear whether Mr. Biden commands anything at this point other than the title.

In the face of the Ukrainian devastation, Biden was recently asked: “Do you believe Russia is committing war crimes?” His answer was as weak as he is physically -- “We are following it very closely. It’s early to say that.”

A fair question to ask, Mr. President, is when will you have enough evidence to decide that Vladimir Putin is, in fact, a war criminal? Even the Europeans, usually late to the game, have moved forward with such a declaration. Where are you? Where is the vaunted “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave” when so obvious crimes are being committed under the leadership and direction of Putin? During the 1990s the world watched in horror as the Serbs and Croats fought each other and terrible atrocities were committed under the leadership of Radovan Karadzic and others. The world, including America, had no trouble labeling them as war criminals, pursuing and prosecuting them for their actions. When, Mr. Biden, will you wake up, grow a spine, and join the rest of the world in condemning Vladimir Putin as the criminal he is?
