Snake Oil

Numerous thinkers have dubbed America a “therapeutic culture” in which all are victims of one sort or another and all need coddling. The advent of the Wuhan virus in late 2019 strengthened the demand for therapies, ever increasing modes of care, especially psychological. Most of the therapies have been no more than Delphic prescriptions, vague analysis all aimed at making the recipient feel better without regard to real world science and physical condition.
On to the therapy stage the CalHope has lurched with a new promotion offering hope and direction for those in California worried about what comes next with the Chinese virus; how long it will last; what will the next year bring; and apparently, general comforting.
California has been a leader in the movement to infantilize the population, making it ever more dependent on the government. Increasing numbers of people now receive regular monetary assistance from Sacramento and Washington, DC, enabling them to refuse good paying jobs. Drivers licenses, medical care, child care, and public school education are available at no cost to thousands of illegals, creating further numbers of governmental dependents. The offer of CalHope to help Californians to cope with the possibility of further Wuhan-related viruses simply prolongs and exacerbates the tendency toward dependence – the quicksand of government handouts which, like drugs, make the recipient a dependent addict.
In the end, what is California really offering? Snake oil! A fictional remedy for a theoretical ill which is impossible to predict. The danger in California’s new therapy is hat it validates, approves and prolongs the neurotic handwringing of those who have bought the government’s claim that it is “here to help you.” The only help offered by CalHope of assistance is becoming more dependent. That can’t be healthy!
