Unaccountability Circa 2022

Since January 20, 2021, America has suffered under the governance of a party that pretends to lead but is, in fact, lost. Worse, that party refuses to be accountable for its actions and inactions, blaming every failure on a cast of characters united only in the fact that they do not belong to the party. Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, Big Oil, the meat packing companies, suppliers of baby formula, etc. are all responsible for the ills that assail the country. The ruling party, the Democrats, refuse to be accountable.

If the polling companies are to be believed, the Republican Party is poised to retake control of at least the House of Representative and perhaps the Senate in November of this year. We may fairly ask, “So what?” What difference will a change in control of Congress make? Do the Republicans have a plan for governance other than “We’re not the Democrats?” Sen. Rick Scott has published a plan, but establishment Republicans have rejected it, largely without discussion. Why?

In 1994, Congressman Newt Gingrich and the Republican Party introduced The Contract with America. It spelled out ten specific plans that the Republican Party intended to enact if given control of Congress. The genius of The Contract with America was that it was specific. It was not a statement of generalities and promises not to be Democrats. The Contract set up standards by which the Republicans could be judged – measured, if you will. They either performed or they did not. Perhaps that is the reason the modern Republican Party [Kevin McCarthy, et al.] refuse to issue such a plan or statement. If you make no promises, you can’t be held accountable for nonperformance. Just like the Dems!

When the Republicans become serious about governing and develop some respect for their electorate, maybe they will be willing to be held accountable for what they do and don’t. Until then, Ratcatcher is not sure the November elections will make any real difference. We hope we are wrong. We sincerely hope to be surprised.
