Universal Destruction

David Harsanyi, writing in The Daily Signal on Monday, December 27th, presented a compelling case that the Democrat Party cares little or nothing about preserving the governing principles of America, preferring to establish a majoritarian form of government, one explicitly rejected by the Founders. The latest example of that is found in the outrage of many Democrat leaders over the refusal of Senator Joe Manchin to fall in line and vote to support the Biden monstrosity known as “Build Back Better.”

Their current argument is that Sen. Manchin, in failing to vote with the rest of the lemming Democrats in the Senate, somehow betray not only President Biden but more importantly, his duty as a senator to vote with his party regardless of his own conscience or the desires of his constituents. Manchin’s alleged betrayal has provoked the Democrats to renew their demands for the abolition of the Electoral College, the “packing” of the Supreme Court, and most immediately, for Mr. Biden to issue executive orders implementing the programs that failed to earn passage in the Senate. These are illegitimate demands. Democrats railed against Donald Trump’s use of executive power; they have fought tooth and nail to control the composition of the Supreme Court; and were quick to remind all of us that the Electoral College should be honored and preserved when its use inured to their benefit. They will use whatever tool is at hand and fits the task to preserve and enhance their power.

That brings us back to Mr. Harsanyi’s excellent piece. He asks the rhetorical question: “But what does it mean when historians, politicians, and left-wing leaders make statements such as, “Last time I checked, I didn’t vote for Joe Manchin for president”? Surely, they understand that the president isn’t a legislator. Surely, they comprehend that every senator is imbued with exactly the same amount of power.” And continues a few lines later pointing out the danger of such arguments. “. . . maybe progressives are just spinning their wheels in the short term, but they’re also normalizing a kind of radicalism within their ranks that threatens American governance.”

In the penultimate paragraph, Harsanyi says the Democrat Party is “terrible at real-world governance.” Ratcatcher is not certain what is meant by “real-world governance,” but we are confident to content that the Democrats have shown themselves more than competent when it comes to governing in a manner apparently designed to destroy America, its traditions, values, and reorder society. It may be that Mr. Harsanyi would contend that this is evidence of his premise; the Democrat Party is incapable to real-world governance. But while we are waiting to learn the denouement of their policies, it seems clear that the destruction is nearly universal.
